报告摘要

Facing a long selling season, a downstream distributor often requires an upstream manufacturer to deliver an order in multiple shipments at different stages of the season. This paper is motivated by our observation for multi-shipment practices in industries, where the manufacturer commonly allows discretionary adjustments that are confined to two consecutive shipments on contracted quantities. In a manufacturer-distributor supply chain, we develop dynamic programming models that formalize the impacts of such {\it consecutive shipment flexibility (CSF)} and characterize the optimal policies and coordinating conditions for centralized and decentralized systems. In the context of multi-shipment problems, CSF  embodies a new principle we term as {\it Globally Anchored and Locally Adjustable (GALA)} for multi-period stochastic problems, which displays superior performance in both computation and system efficiency. On one hand, although incorporating CSF turns the static multi-shipment problem into a multi-period problem, we can still efficiently characterize the optimal policies due to certain functional properties, achieving the computational simplicity of the static model. On the other hand, although GALA imposes certain constraints on dynamic decisions, the resulting loss of efficiency is not significant. Furthermore, regarding the conventional wisdom that flexibility may lower ordering quantities, hurting the upstream manufacturers, our results show that orders may be deferred, but will not be reduced under CSF.

   邓天虎(博士,副教授)目前就职于清华大学工业工程系。2013年于美国加州大学伯克利分校获得工业工程与运筹博士学位,2008年于清华大学工业工程系获得学士学位。目前研究方向侧重智慧供应链。以第一作者和通讯作者在Manufacturing & Service Operations ManagementOperations Research等国际高水平学术期刊和学术会议发表论文20余篇。
